Today I was a baking fool. My son's fifth birthday is coming up and I have been challenged with a Star Wars cake request. Not believing too strongly in my cake decorating ability, I have decided against Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker or any of those other characters. Instead, I bought the game Pick-Up Sticks from the grocery store and after I ice the thing with chocolate frosting I plan to jam Pick-Up Sticks into it and call it a light saber cake. Could be a flop. Time will tell :). In addition to this light saber cake I will be making Betty Crocker brownies for my son's chocolate-addict mother (yeah, that's me).

Happy National Bowling Week

I can hear the excitement traveling over cyberspace. Yep, that's right. We're smack-dab, in-the-middle-of National Bowling Week, which runs from July 31 through August 7. How could we not discuss this monumental event?

No, no, I'm not mocking. I have fond memories of bowling as a child. Granted, most of my balls landed in the gutter, but it was still a fun bonding time with family and friends. I remember the time my college friends and I dressed up in costumes for no apparent reason and headed to a bowling alley for a game...or the time my school held a midnight bowling event and I walked away with the Worst Bowler of the Night award...or the...well, you get the drift. Bowling=Good times. 'Nuf said.

Starting with an old cell phone, he made a series of strategic trades, including swapping up for an iPod, a laptop and a dirt bike. Confessions of a Lapse Blogger

Perhaps you've noticed my last post was more than a month ago. I haven't moved onto greener pastures. I haven't died, nor have I been summering in any exotic locales. The truth is way less exciting. I started this blog last November. My goal was to make it to the blog big leagues, reeling in enough click-thru revenues to shake off some of my less desirable freelance work. The reality was much different from my expectations, and in June, I gave up. It was too much work with not enough payoff.

Well, if the story ended there I wouldn't be sitting at my computer right now. As I was excitedly filling out a refinance application last week, I realized that I no longer have an outlet to share my (historically low) 4.5% mortgage rates with $0 closing costs deal. And when a box from SC Johnson arrived today with free Pledge wipes, free Ziploc bags and free toilet gel, I thought others could still benefit from my nose for bargains.

So, I have decided to give it another go. This time, hopefully, with more realistic expectations. My approach will not be "me too" anymore, trying to compete with the larger bargain blogs. Now I'm just me. You'll still see plenty of coupons and deals (because I genuinely like that stuff), but it will be a more conversational, laid-back style and I'll only post when I feel like it. I might also expand into other finance topics because I genuinely like that stuff too.

Printable Coupon Round-Up

Good morning!

Before I launch into this week’s printable coupon round-up, I want to reiterate a point about saving money on groceries. I routinely save $100+ a week on groceries, but I’d estimate that only 20-30 percent of this savings is on account of coupons. Most of my savings are because I've changed the way I shop, thinking more "sale to sale" and not "week to week". This principle is called stockpiling. Stockpiling is when you buy items only when they are on sale and buy enough to last you to the next sale (So, for example, if your family eats a box of Cheerios every week, you wait for the sale and then buy four of them on sale week instead of buying one a week when they aren't on sale). I’ve explained the benefits in more detail here.

I'm psyched for the beautiful Memorial Day weekend forecast, which means a day at the beach is a strong possibility!
